Program to Enhance Adjustment to Residential Living (PEARL)
Moving into residential care represents a significant life transition for older adults. The early weeks following admission can be challenging, as residents experience relocation stress, a recognized response that may include feelings of uncertainty, loss, reduced control, and anxiety. Supporting emotional wellbeing during this period is essential, as it sets the foundation for long-term adjustment and quality of life.
Structured interventions have been shown to ease this adjustment process. One such evidence-based approach is the Program to Enhance Adjustment to Residential Living (PEARL). PEARL is designed to support residents through the early weeks of transition by addressing three core psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Autonomy is promoted by enabling residents to make meaningful choices about their daily routines and care. Competence is supported by encouraging engagement in purposeful and meaningful activities that align with personal interests and strengths. Relatedness focuses on fostering connections with staff, family, and fellow residents to build a sense of social support and belonging.
Research demonstrates that PEARL can significantly reduce anxiety, enhance adjustment, and improve overall quality of life for newly admitted residents (Davison et al., 2022). By providing structured, person-centered support, care teams can help residents navigate the initial stress of relocation more confidently and with greater emotional resilience. The program also emphasizes collaboration with staff, ensuring that strategies are realistic and sustainable within the daily care environment.
In practice, incorporating evidence-informed interventions like PEARL highlights the importance of acknowledging relocation stress, validating residents’ experiences, and actively supporting their psychological needs. For care providers, understanding and applying these strategies can create a more positive transition experience, ultimately enhancing both wellbeing and engagement in residential care.
