Chamomile as an activity

Chamomile in Senior Care: A Plant with Endless Possibilities

Having a single topic per week in senior care could help with focus and memory. One topic can branch out into different activities so the seniors in your care could choose which activity interests them, while building a community and common interests.

Using Chamomile as an example:

Start the week with a trip to a local garden centre. Residents can explore a variety of plants and seeds, selecting Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) for the garden. Alternatively, a visit to the supermarket to explore chamomile teas can spark discussion about flavors, aromas, and cultural traditions. These outings provide fresh air, social interaction, and gentle cognitive stimulation.
Once back at the care setting, horticulture activities can begin. Roman chamomile is a low-growing, perennial plant with a sweet, apple-like fragrance, ideal for small containers or garden borders. German chamomile is an annual, taller plant with a more pronounced, herbaceous aroma. Residents can participate in planting, watering, and observing growth, supporting physical activity, focus, and a sense of accomplishment.
Botany discussions complement gardening tasks. Residents can explore plant anatomy, compare perennial and annual growth cycles, or press chamomile flowers for crafts. Smelling and handling the plants engages multiple senses, encouraging memory recall and meaningful conversation.
Chamomile tea tasting is another way to engage residents’ senses. Sampling different teas allows discussion about flavour, scent, and cultural traditions. This provides a gentle sensory experience while fostering social interaction and curiosity.
By starting with an outing and following through with hands-on horticulture, sensory exploration, and botanical learning, chamomile becomes a single theme that supports wellbeing, curiosity, and social connection. This flexible approach allows residents to explore nature, culture, and sensory experiences in one engaging week-long activity plan.

All the best
