The Four Stages of Settling into Residential Care: A Gradual Journey of Adaptation
Settling into residential care is not a single event, but a gradual process of adaptation. Research by Sun et al. (2021) highlights that older adults often move through four distinct stages as they transition into a new home — each one shaped by emotional, practical, and relational changes.
Understanding these stages can help families, staff, and residents navigate the journey with greater compassion and patience.

The journey begins with Decision-Making, a reflective stage where older adults and their families weigh options, discuss needs, and prepare emotionally for the move. This stage often brings mixed feelings — from relief and hope to uncertainty about change.
Once the move takes place, many experience Fluctuation, a period of emotional ups and downs. It’s natural to feel unsettled, homesick, or unsure during the first few weeks. Recognising this as a normal stage helps staff and families offer reassurance and consistency.
Gradually, Adjustment follows. Residents begin to develop routines, build new connections, and find familiarity in daily life. Supportive environments and meaningful activities play a key role in helping residents feel grounded and confident.
Finally, Acceptance emerges — a gentle sense of peace and belonging as the new setting becomes home. This stage reflects emotional stability, renewed confidence, and a sense of community.
Every resident’s journey is unique, with no fixed timeline. By acknowledging each stage, families and care professionals can provide the right support at the right time — helping residents not only settle in, but truly thrive.
