Resident empowerment

It is hard to imagine how difficult it must be to lose your independence. It can happen in the blink of an eye, a sudden stroke can leave someone totally dependent on help from others.

Our nursing homes are full of people that have lost some aspect of their independence, whether from cognitive decline or the loss of a physical ability.

So many people who work in the residential care sector do an amazing job of caring for people who have lost their independence.

However, it is important to always remember that empowering the resident so they can maintain as much independence as possible and retain their sense of self is a very important part of caring.

Sometimes, it is the very small things that actually mean the most to someone.

Below is a downloadable list of some examples of what can make a difference to someone in your nursing home.

These are just examples and should be implemented in conjunction with the resident needs, wants and abilities along with advice from their medical teams, physiotherapists and or occupational therapist.

The use of essential oils is also an effective tool for resident empowerment as the sense of smell can aid memory recall.  Please fill in the contact form for training in how to use essential oils effectively and safely in your nursing home.

Until next time,

Liz
