I have been asked several times about the Essence 52 programme and was it absolutely necessary to have included a different topic for 52 weeks of the year? Was it not a bit much for the residents? The short answer is no. A 52 week programme with a different topic is exactly what is needed for older adults living in a residential care.
I didn't set out to develop a 52 week programme. I just tried to provide a weekly service for the residents that included the use of essential oils and relaxation that they would want to attend every week.
A nursing home activity timetable with weekly activities such as exercise, art, games and music is necessary for the wellbeing of the residents. The timetable can provide structure and a routine to the week. However, what I discovered is that there does need to be a bit more variation so the residents can look forward to something different.
Cultural festivities do provide the needed variation throughout the year, and this is usually enough for those of us who live in the community with careers, homes and loved ones to care for, holidays to plan etc.
For nursing home residents, who no longer have the normal responsibilities of day to day living that they were used to while living at home do need more than the occasional cultural festivity.
Essence 52 provides the weekly variety that can supplement and integrate with the standard activities timetable to make each week in residential care different, not only for the residents but the staff too.

Until next time,
